Charley Chipps presents an above-average physical profile with significant room to continue developing physically and athletically. His whippy arm action and present pitch characteristics give him an intriguing foundation, particularly as his body and overall athleticism continue to mature. He brings a competitive edge to the mound and shows the ability to learn quickly.
Chipps works with a four-seam fastball at 85 mph (topping at 88), a two-seam fastball at 78-79 mph, a 67-69 mph slider, and a 74 mph changeup. The two-seam and changeup both show notable arm-side run, giving him a useful movement profile to work away from barrels. His slider shows quality glove-side action against right-handed hitters and has the versatility to be used both for strikes and as a put-away pitch. The combination of movement and pitch variety gives him multiple ways to attack hitters as his command continues to develop.
From a delivery standpoint, Chipps sets with a narrow base from the third-base edge of the rubber. He works from the windup with his hands set around the letters and maintains a quick pace throughout the delivery. His high leg kick creates separation while his hands remain relatively quiet before breaking into a quick, whippy arm action. He lands firmly and generally carries his momentum toward the first-base side. His release features a high three-quarter slot with a tucked glove-side finish. One developmental area will be maintaining the same arm speed and intent on his off-speed pitches, as he can occasionally slow the arm when throwing secondary offerings.
Makeup: Chipps learns quickly and brings a high level of competitiveness to the mound. His willingness to absorb information and make adjustments is encouraging, particularly as his physical tools continue to develop. His competitive nature should allow him to continue attacking hitters and embracing the developmental process.
Overall: Chipps is an intriguing pitching prospect with a combination of present velocity, movement, athletic projection, and competitive makeup. The 85 mph four-seam gives him a solid foundation, while the arm-side run on the two-seam and changeup and the slider's ability to move away from right-handed hitters provide a diverse arsenal. Continued physical development could lead to additional velocity, while maintaining consistent arm speed on his secondary pitches should improve the overall quality of his stuff. If those pieces continue to come together, Chipps has the physical and pitching foundation to make meaningful strides as he advances to the next level.
